One of the main concerns of the people inhabiting in deserts of Iran is always the issue of water scarcity. The people of Kerman are not exceptions and are mostly innovative in water conservation. In addition to qanat, yakhchal or ice house is also another innovation for conservation and consumption of water and ice.
Moayedi Yakhchal or Moayedi Ice House, which is the greatest Adobe Yakhchal in the world, dates back to the Safavid dynasty and it is 20 meters high.
In general, yakhchal works as following:
there is a flat wall surrounding the dome which keeps the molded ice. Then at night, the water which flows from qanat into yakhchal will be poured into the molds and due to the cold weather, the water will be frozen till next day and then the ice will be placed in holes which are embedded on the ice house’s floor.
Moayedi Ice House is surrounded by many tourist attractions such as the Ganjali Khan complex, Harandy garden museum, and Zoroastrian Museum.
