The construction of the present tomb of Hafez or Hafeziyeh began in 1935, and it was completed in 1937, but before that, the tomb of Hafez, the great Iranian poet, was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In addition to the tomb of this great poet, the Hafez Tomb complex includes other sections, mostly made during the Zand Dynasty.
Southern part
This section includes two large gardens and several yards, with a hallway.
4 Columns Hall
This hall is 5 meters high and 56 meters long and constructed by the order of Karim Khan Zand. The architecture of this hall was inspired by the architecture of the Achaemenid era and Zand. Hafez’s poems are written on the walls of this Hall.
From the world’s rose – garden one rose of the cheek is for us enough
Oh, Heart – ravisher thou art not a speech – recogniser. Here, the fault is
North part
This part of the area is a former public cemetery. There is also a library with 10,000 volumes of books, on the western side of the library there is an old Ghahv-e Khaneh and on the east side a handicrafts shop.
In the morning, the invisible speaker of the wine – house with a fortune – wishing,
Said O Hafiz come back for an old friend of this court thou art.
Oh true Beloved the chamber of vision of my eye is the dwelling of Thine
Show courtesy, and alight, for this house, is the House of Thine
Tomb of Hafez Building
The grave of Hafez is about 1-meter-high from the surface of the ground, and this gravestone was placed during the era of Karim Khan. Around this building has written poetry of Hafez. The interior of the roof of the shrine is known as a sun symbol.
The dust of my body is the veil of the true Beloved’s face
Oh happy that moment when from off this face, the veil I cast
Where, the glad tidings of union with Thee, so that, from the desire of life, I may rise
The holy bird of paradise am I from the world’s snare, I rise.
Oh Saki of Alast when, by the head of our tomb thou passest, ask for grace for me
For, the pilgrimage – place of the profligate’s perfect lovers, comprehenders of the stages of the love of the world, the tomb of Hafiz shall be.
Tomb of Hafez Western part
This part is a burial site is a number of elders of Shiraz, including Ahmad Ghavam (Prime minister during Pahlavi Dynasty), and also devoted part of this section to the Hafez studies Center.
Tomb of Hafez Eastern part
In the eastern part, there is a wall that poems of Hafez written on it.
The green expanse of sky, I beheld and the sickle the crescent of the new moon
To me, recollection came of my own sown – field and of the time of reaping the judgment – day
Oh Zahid, pure of nature censure, not the profligates
For, against thee, they will not record another’s a crime.
