One of the interesting innovations of the people of the desert in Iran has been the construction of icehouses. The city of Kerman is one of the desert cities in Iran, and lots of icehouses are built in it, the most famous of which are Moayedi Icehouse and Zericf Icehouse. Icehouses are structures made of brick and clay, which were usually built next to rivers or aqueducts. Since the nights are extremely cold in the desert areas, ice was made using special moulds, and was stored for summer.
Zericf Icehouse is one of the important icehouses of Kerman city, which goes back to the Qajar period. In addition to being built in a domical shape, this structure has walls beside it that prevent direct sunlight from hitting the icehouse. Architecturally speaking, this dome is five meters high, which also has a pit for the storage of the ice. In the past, a stream flowing from the nearby aqueducts used to be beside the icehouse which provided its water, but it was destroyed after being dried up.
Jabalieh Dome, Moshtaghieh Dome, Ardeshir Castle, and Zoroastrian Museum are among the attractions in the vicinity of Zericf Icehouse.
