The Zand dynasty era, especially the Karim Khan Zand reign period is the golden era of contemporary architecture and constructions in Shiraz city. Arg-e Karim Khan (Arg of Karim Khan or Karim Khan Citadel) is one of the fortresses which was built during this period, which was founded in 1767 by order of Karim Khan Zand.
In general, citadels in Iran were like a small town that had all the essential things to live in during sieges or wars. The total area of the citadel, in addition to the surrounded area, is more than 12500 m2. In the four corners of this citadel, brick towers are constructed with a height of about 14 meters, which are joined with walls of 12 meters and 3 meters thickness.
Rooms, a water system, a private mansion of the king (The Sun Mansion), private bathroom are the main and most important parts of the Arg-e Karim Khan.
During Qajar Dynasty Arg-e Karim Khan was the residence of local governors and became a prison in the Pahlavi era until it was rebuilt in 1971 and assigned to the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization of Iran.
Pars Museum, Bazaar, Mosque, Bath and Ab Anbar (water reservoir) of Vakill are some of the attractions in the vicinity of the Citadel.
