Being born in 941 (Gregorian Calendar), Abu ‘l-Qasim Ferdowsi Tusi was a Persian poet and the author of Shahnameh (Book of Kings), the national Iranian epic. Some count him as one of the greatest Persian poets who has world-wide fame. Ferdowsi passed away in 1025 (Gregorian Calendar) and his body was buried in Tous.
Based on some historical reports, the Tomb of Ferdowsi was an unostentatious monument that was destroyed and reconstructed several times. Finally, in the early decades of the 20th century and with the commencement of the Iranian Nationalism motion, a decision was made to construct a suitable monument for Ferdowsi’s tomb. The monument was designed and constructed in 1934 by Hooshang Seyhoun. Inside of the construction is decorated with tiles painted with figures related to some of Shahnameh’s stories. There are also epigraphs of some verses of Shahnameh inside the tomb.
The cultural complex of the Ferdowsi Tomb consists of a pool, the sculpture of Ferdowsi, the official building, the library, the museum, and the tomb of Mahdi Akhavan Sales (Iranian contemporary poet). Tomb of Ferdowsi has located 25 Km of the northwest of Mashhad and near Pazh village (where Ferdowsi was born).
