Jameh Mosque of Yazd is one of Iran’s masterpieces that contains symbols from three different historical periods due to being completed in 100 years and during three periods. The foundation of the Jameh Mosque of Yazd was built during the Sasanian period as a fire temple, the Gonbad-Khaneh section (the dome chamber) was built during the Ilkhanate period and the high portal of the mosque was constructed and added to it at the time of Shah Rukh and during the Timurid period.
The present building the Mosque has an area of about 10,000 square meters including the entrance portal, Jelokhan (a vast area located in front of a great and important building), a wide Sahn (courtyard), sidelong porticos of Sahn, iwan (a rectangular hall or space, usually vaulted, walled on three sides, with one end entirely open), Gonbad-Khaneh, the adjacent Shabestans, large columned Shabestan, library, rich and beautiful decorations and inscriptions and historical and non-historical petroglyphs.
Jameh Mosque of Yazd is located on the east of Yazd and near historical sites such as Alexander Prison, Clock Square, and Mesgarha Bazaar.
