Gonbad-e Sorkh (The Crimson Dome) is one of the several domes built in Maragheh city that belongs to the Seljuk period and was built in 1147 (A.D.). Architecturally, Gonbad-e Sorkh was built in a quadrilateral structure, which experts believe was used for determining the seasons and hours during the day and night, before Maragheh Observatory was constructed. There are several inscriptions on the walls of the building that refer to the architect and the person who ordered the dome to be built, but none of the inscriptions mention who was buried in the building.
